INFORMATION ON THE BREED!             

Before settling on a breed of dog, Akita specifically, I strongly recommend that you research the breed if you are a first time Akita owner, they are much more than a fluffy cute puppy!
Here is a little information on them.

The Akita is a national monument in its native Japan, the Akita has been used as a versatile hunting dog, hunting mostly large game for many years.  There is even a spiritual significance attached to the breed - when a child is born in Japan, the family will receive an Akita statue signifying health, happiness, and long life.  The Akita first arrived in the United States when Helen Keller brought one over in 1937.

Although known to be a quiet dog (they are known as the "Silent Hunter" in Japan), the Akita has stong guarding instincts and will sound the alarm if an unknown intruder breaks into their house, or enters the property.  Akita temperament can range from calm to bouncy and aggressive, so the breed should always be supervised around small children and other animals.  Akita's like to be "pack leader," so obedience training is recommended, and a strong hand is neaded in raising the Akita to ensure a harmonious houseold.
The breed will groom itself like a cat, but daily brushing is still necessary, as is daily exercise.  These animals do not do well in an apartment setting as they need room to run.  A fenced yard with a 6 foot fence is the ideal setting.  They are also diggers and will dig if they are bored or feel neglected.

 The Akita has a thick double coat that they will shed or blow twice per year, the entire under coat sheds out and can be a bit messy for a week or so, grooing during this period is a must.

As far a color they can come in any color, including pure white, brindle, pinto, reds, black, brown, ect.  They usually all have a variety of markings, and no two Akita's are the same in color!
